The Most Marvelous Organ>The Brain (2707 hits)

The fact is, your brain is the most marvelous organ in your body, capable of performing at a very high level through most of your life, particularly if you take care of it.

Yet most people fail to appreciate the value of that big bump on their shoulders, and that’s a shame, because with a little focus, most of our brains could be performing at a higher level!

And the upside to that is that you can delay—and perhaps totally avoid—the pain, heartbreak and complications that come with dementia and Alzheimer disease. I think you’ll agree that’s a worthy goal.

So here—short and sweet—are six ways you can keep your brain young and healthy.

• Don’t smoke. Your brain thrives on the oxygen it gets from your bloodstream, and smoking interferes with the effective delivery of that oxygen, replacing it instead with a steady stream of poisons.

• Don’t bump it. I just enjoyed the boxing film The Fighter, but there’s no way I would let my kids get punched in the head like that. Football is dangerous too—even with helmets—as the folks in the NFL are beginning to recognize.

• Do something new or different, whether it’s driving home by a different route, learning a language, playing a musical instrument, or taking up a new (non-contact) sport. Even something as simple—yet challenging—as using a fork with your other hand can help your brain.

• Exercise. Like any muscle in your body, your brain will benefit from the increased flow of nutrient-rich blood.

• Eat more fruits and vegetables, particularly those with high antioxidant properties like blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, strawberries, spinach, raspberries, brussels sprouts, plums, broccoli, beets, avocados, oranges, red grapes, red bell peppers, cherries and kiwis. Your synapses will thank you.

• Eat fish and/or take Omega 3 supplements. Not only do they reduce dementia and Alzheimer disease, they also reduce depression, lower blood pressure and improve heart health.

Need your support.
